Memorial Day Weekend May 24 2008

It sounds funny to say "Memorial Day Weekend", because the day in question is always on a Monday, but the preceeding weekend falls under the title of the day being celebrated. I don't think there's any other holiday or special day observed where we, in the USA, do this, besides "Labor Day Weekend". On Memorial Day, I think we need to not only remember those who gave their lives for us, but we should also not forget those men and women in high positions who make the decisions to send our loved ones into "war" in the first place. Peace to all people involved in war!

Grads and noises from May 17 2008

This entry is dedicated to all the graduates, today, yesterday and tomorrow...'cause you know there's someone out there who's all misty eyed and is doing everthing she/he can do hold it in. But with all the pomp and circumstance, it isn't always easy. Myrtle's "honk" reminds me of a situation I found myself in, while in drama class in high school. The students had prepared a 5 minute piece, and we were all taking our turns presenting them in front of the class to each other. Right before someone started a very serious piece, a girl named Sue sneezed, and made a big honking noise while doing so - a noise that struck my funny bone, and it became one of those situations where I wanted to burst out laughing, but couldn't, although you could hear me snickering and see me turning red and sweating, trying so hard not to. It was awful, and the actor doing the serious presentation was highly insulted, of course, and I had a lot of explaining and apologizing to do. Like laughing in church, which will probably be another entry down the road. Good luck, grads!

"Mom" rules in Fayette-cetera for May 10 2008

Just exactly at what age does a Mom develop eyes on the back of her head? And where exactly is Mom when we can't find her, but we know she's there? My advice to you: ask your Mom these questions while she's still in your life. My Mom passed away at a very young age - she was 58 in 1989, and it happened very quickly. Over the years, I've come up with questions that I would have liked to ask Mom - questions about her life as a kid, and the adults who were in her life then. I know she would be pleased reading "Fayette-cetera" each week - she believed and inspired me in all of my different interests involving my ever developing comic world. Mom was always helping me aqcuire the many "Peanut" books that filled the shelves of my room. When you're a kid, and you're into something like the "comics", it's great when an adult connects with you - you somehow feel justified, thinking "hey, if an older person likes this same thing that I'm involved in, it must mean that this "thing" is a pretty good thing!" But when it's your Mom, it's a true blessing. Who better understands you than your Mom, anyhow? Happy Mother's Day, Mom! I know you're reading this, too.

Fayette-cetera for May 3 2008

Funny - when I drew this strip, the weather in May was great. Several days were pretty warm, in fact. Being Missouri raised and all, I knew that we could really jump right through spring-like weather into summer-like weather...so I thought it would be nice to show the characters in different modes of nice/warm spring days. Little did I know that one short week later, the weather would change so rapidly, that folks were worried about their outdoor plants and newly planted vegetables!! We're riding Mother Natures weather roller-coaster, and a lot of people don't like it - up and down and up and down, goes the temperature. It's very cold and windy on this Mother's Day - perhaps some of you Moms out there will find some "warmth" in this (or the following) comic entries!
